Only a qualified allergist or physician should perform and supervise a food allergy test under controlled conditions and environment.
How is the food allergy test conducted?
Extracts of food products being tested for allergic reactions and neutral substances acting as placebos are usually encased in gelatin capsules. Test results are normally available in as short a period as 5 minutes or as long as 7 days, and is usually dependent on the complexity of the case on hand.
Risks and complications involved
Performing these tests should always be under the supervision of a qualified doctor under controlled conditions because of the risk of very severe reactions that can be life threatening. Common reactions during these tests are nausea, diarrhea, runny nose and eyes; in general, however, these tests are safe when done properly.
Other food allergy tests:
- Food provocation test
- Food challenge test
- Indigestion test
The above-mentioned tests are designed to validate that an allergy reaction is directly related to a specific food, its ingredient or food additive. These tests are normally a last resort if not enough data is available to determine the cause of food allergy.
Preparing for the food allergy test:
- Avoid eating any food products that may be the cause of the allergy.
- Do not take antihistamines or any anti-allergy drugs prior to the test.
This test is done by administering an injection or by asking the patient to swallow a test capsule full of the food ingredients being tested after which a period of observation ensues to determine any reaction or symptoms.
To ensure validity of the results, neutral capsules may also be administered at the same time to induce a placebo effect wherein neither the doctor nor the patient are aware which capsule contains the placebo and the real food ingredient.
The performance of a food allergy test becomes more effective and highly reliable the capsules are administered together with the intake of other safe foods products. After the test, a waiting period of 20 to 30 minutes for observation of results is required; repetition of the test may be necessary to induce several observable reactions. Appearance of allergy symptoms normally persists for several days. Should conclusive results be obtained based on the food allergy test, prescribed medication and medical advise on the types of food to avoid is also necessary. With proper assistance from your doctor, food allergies are easily managed and kept under control.
